The Byte Difference
Local optimization gets stuck. Global optimization doesn't.
On a corporate wireless account, nothing stands alone. Plans depend on device types, pools are shared, features interact with plans, and one change shifts the cost of another.
Most tools improve one line at a time and stop at the first good-looking answer, which is a local minimum. Byte evaluates the whole account at once and finds the true lowest total cost.
Analysts and local-only tools
- Look at each line or each rule on its own
- Miss how plans, pools, devices and features affect one another
- Recommend changes that save on one line and cost more overall
- Cannot realistically re-check everything every month
Byte global optimization
- Considers every dependency and connection on the account together
- Optimizes plans and features (long distance, roaming and more) as a set
- Targets the lowest total cost, not just the lowest cost per line
- Repeatable every cycle, with results you can show
Built for Telecom Expense Management (TEM) and Enterprise Mobility Management providers
A partner for your team, not a competitor
Byte does one thing: optimization, for Telecom Expense Management (TEM), Enterprise Mobility Management and managed mobility teams. We don't support end users, handle ordering or produce accounting reports. That's your business, and we're not in it. Outsource the part no human team can get fully right, and keep everything else.
Byte handles
- Global optimization of plans and features
- Full optimizations each cycle
- Mid-cycle optimizations that catch usage anomalies before they raise costs
- Documented savings and cost avoidance
- Detection of billing errors
You keep
- The customer relationship
- End-user support
- Ordering and provisioning
- Accounting and reporting
Benefits
Why Telecom Expense Management providers add Byte
More savings for customers
Global optimization finds savings that line-by-line methods and manual reviews miss.
Analyst time back
Free your analysts from optimization work no person can get right, so they can help customers instead.
Proof that builds loyalty
Show verified savings and cost avoidance every cycle. When Byte saves customers more than it costs, there is little reason to leave, and the results support the fees you charge.
Billing error detection
Byte also detects billing errors, so incorrect charges can be caught and raised with the carrier.
Cost reduction and managed service companies also use Byte to bring global optimization to the accounts they manage.
How it works
From carrier data to a clear list of changes
Byte works the same way for every carrier. You supply the same core information, and Byte does the rest.
Provide the data
Upload files in the web panel, or send them through the API.
Choose your rules
Pick the as-of date and set any preferences, such as lines that must keep certain plans or features.
Run the optimization
Byte evaluates the whole account at once. Accounts under 1,000 lines typically finish in under 5 minutes.
Share the proof
Get a cost comparison and a line-by-line change list to review, act on and show your customer.
What Byte needs, for any carrier
- Carrier billing dataThe electronic bill, with account, line and usage-level charges and usage. For Verizon, this is the Raw Data Download.
- Device reportAn extract of the devices in use, because certain plans belong to certain device types.
- Normalized contractThe available plans, features and pricing options under the customer's agreement.
- Unbilled usage report OptionalRecent usage not yet billed, for an up-to-date picture.
Your rules, respected
Require specific lines to keep certain plans or features even when they aren't the cheapest option.
Rules for groups
Set plans or features for groups of users, such as everyone over 10 GB a month or an entire department.
Any carrier
Byte can be customized to handle any carrier. US carriers are supported today, with international carriers planned.
Sample report
Results your customers can see
Every run produces a simulated cost comparison between the current setup and the optimized one, plus a change list showing each line's new plan or features, its effective date, and whether the change can be backdated to the start of the billing cycle.
| Line | Device | Change | From | To | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ***-***-4817 | Tablet | Plan change | Data 10 GB | Data 100 MB | $58.50 → $10.00 |
| ***-***-3062 | Hotspot | Plan change | Unlimited Plus Data | Data 100 MB | $45.00 → $10.00 |
| ***-***-7295 | Smartphone | Plan change | Unlimited Smartphone | Business Plan | $35.00 → $34.00 |
| ***-***-5540 | Smartphone | Feature removal | Global Calling Plus | (removed) | $15.00 → $0.00 |

About the founder
Stephanie Heys
Founder, Byte Analytics
Stephanie started in corporate wireless in 2007, on the corporate billing team of a large wireless carrier. She stayed on the carrier side long enough to learn how carriers operate from the inside, then moved to Telecom Expense Management (TEM) in 2011, where she held roles in billing, implementations and account management.
Across those years she kept seeing the same systemic failing in TEM systems: optimization is still a manual process for most companies, and the companies that do have software rely on local optimization that misses savings. Stephanie started Byte to fix that.
Her mix of mathematical knowledge, carrier knowledge and TEM experience is what it takes to build the right tool for enterprise wireless optimization.
Stephanie is proud of having saved her customers millions of dollars over the years, at the carriers' expense. She lives in the Washington, DC area.

FAQ
Common questions
What is global optimization for wireless accounts?
Global optimization evaluates every line, plan, feature and contract rule on an account together, instead of one line at a time. Because plans, pools, devices and features depend on one another, the number of possible combinations is far beyond what a person can work through, so global optimization is impossible for a human analyst to do. Byte was built to solve exactly this problem: its software evaluates the whole account at once and finds the lowest total cost, which analysts and line-by-line tools miss.
How is Byte different from the tools and analysts we use today?
Local-only tools and human analysts look at pieces of an account in isolation, so they can settle on changes that save money on one line and cost more overall. Byte considers all the dependencies at once and optimizes plans and features as a complete set.
Does Byte replace our Telecom Expense Management (TEM) or Enterprise Mobility Management platform?
No. Byte only does optimization. We don't provide end-user support, ordering, or accounting and reporting, so Byte slots into your existing workflow and complements your service.
Who is Byte for?
Byte is built for Telecom Expense Management (TEM) companies and Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) and managed mobility services providers. Cost reduction and managed service companies can also use it to optimize the accounts they manage.
What data does Byte need?
For any carrier, Byte needs the carrier's electronic billing data with account, line and usage-level charges and usage; a device report or extract; and a normalized contract with the available pricing options. An unbilled usage report is optional. For Verizon, the billing data is the Raw Data Download.
How long does an optimization take?
Accounts under 1,000 lines usually finish in under 5 minutes. The largest accounts we handle, with over 30,000 lines, can take more than an hour. More lines generally means more time, but Byte is designed to be fast.
What is the difference between a full and a mid-cycle optimization?
A full optimization is done once a month, when the most complete and up-to-date billing information is available, and finds the best combination of plans and features for the account. Mid-cycle optimizations can be run any number of times after the main optimization. They bring the latest usage information into the calculation to optimize even further and to catch usage anomalies before they increase costs.
What is Oraculum?
Oraculum is Byte's predictive analytics feature. It predicts the optimal set of plans for the upcoming billing cycle using past billing data, real-time usage data, industry trends and other data, so optimization can look ahead to the next cycle. It is an option you can choose when setting up an optimization.
Does Byte detect billing errors?
Yes. In addition to optimizing plans and features, Byte detects billing errors, so incorrect charges can be identified and raised with the carrier.
Can we keep certain lines on specific plans or features?
Yes. You can require certain lines to keep specific plans or features even when that isn't the cheapest option, and set rules for groups, such as users over 10 GB a month or everyone in a particular department.
How do we use Byte: web panel or API?
Both. You can run optimizations in the web panel or connect through the API to fit your existing processes.
Which carriers are supported?
Byte can be customized to handle any carrier. Currently only US carriers are supported, and international carriers are planned.
How do we show customers the results?
Each run produces a simulated cost comparison between the current and optimized setup, along with a line-by-line change list, so you can show customers savings and cost avoidance month after month.
How much does Byte cost?
Pricing depends on unit volume and the level of service required, and it can be structured per unit or as a contingency fee based on a percentage of savings, whichever is best for the customer. It is designed to be affordable and to save money compared with manual processes. Contact us for a quote.
